I mean absolutely no disrespect to those suffering the tragedies of Hurricane Helene, Nepal or the Middle East as our dreariness is not the least comparable. The rebuilding will seem forever for those affected but I hope it proceeds more rapidly than it may well seem.
I have become tired of cloudy days, however (Certainly a first world problem I readily admit). A fortnight straight, with a single brief interlude Saturday afternoon, was not my favorite weather to get some early autumn shots which revive my spirits worn down by the onslaught of dreadful events. One of the few respites were two evenings’s startling photographs from a valued friend retired to the shores of Puget Sound. His double rainbows over Mount Rainier only made me hunger for more photo opportunities closer to home.
Today I appreciate the views with nothing but awe. Forgive me but this is a photography column to illustrate this joy.
As you likely know, I adore reflections because of their delicacy.
The color arrived a few minutes later, deep and complex because the light emanates so much further south these days and the resulting angles create such different looks from even six weeks ago.
We attended a service at the Naval Academy this morning but I could not ignore the early October sunlight struggling to pierce stubborn clouds as the confluence of the Severn River and Spa Creek beckoned it down to the water’s surface.
By late morning, the sun’s light made everything, especially this fountain, look so much happier than a couple of days ago. Or, perhaps my mood brightened as I welcomed back the sun’s resuscitative powers.
The billowing clouds offer a dreamy yet watchful eye over the powerboat show kicking off today as it similarly kicks locals out of the City Dock area to accommodate the massive crowds.
The Maryland Capital dome watches over the proceedings with pride and unmatched history.
Finally, a fuschia bud and a dahlia refuse to surrender to either clouds or fading light, enduring reminders of nature’s bounty withstanding so much.
So, yes, this is a day of awe, one I am so grateful to experience. The action of sunlight appearing has had amazing consequences for me. I can only hope the same for those so profoundly struggling to clear damage, whether here or elsewhere around the world regardless the cause. Get out to see some sunlight, if you can.

I like the fountain and I like the positive approach.
