The Trump indictment will likely become a national circus this week after the indictment when the indictment charges are public. As all know, this is unprecedented for the United States, with echoes to a surprising (to me) number of people voicing concern this is a political action rather than a rule of law problem.
I fear that distinction will tear us further apart but I worry even more that the extraordinary tasks of governing will come to a halt within Congress. In particular, I worry about the spending and taxation and budget items we cannot ignore.
We face perhaps the biggest test, beyond retaining our democracy, from the probable inability for the Congress and Executive to agree to raise the debt ceiling. As I discussed in January, this is not and never has been about controlling future spending. The debt ceiling question is money we already spent.
