I stand corrected about the Met Gala I wrote about two days ago. My grasp of the event, triggered admittedly by a Kim Kardashian photography appearing to pare Scarlett O’Hara’s 16 inch waist in Gone with the Wind, was feeble, at best. I apologize to all who are better in tune with popular culture.
As a loyal reader, friend and also retired former colleague informed me yesterday as we awaited a webinar we were addressing, the Met Gala stems not merely from fund raising but celebrates the textile and fashion division of the Metropolitan Museum. I am so embarrassed that I did not realise that because I see the fashion books in the gift shop but had never put two and two together. But more relevant is my daughter-in-law’s astonishing gift as a dressmaker and costumer for theaters in several locations including the Big Apple so I should have known or at least asked her.
I suppose my ignorance results from my inability to cut a piece of fabric correctly, much less follow a pattern or actually sew. We are talking major fail here. Actions create consequences: incapacity breeds ignorance.
I also admit that the dresses (or facsimiles thereof) I saw earlier this week in newspapers baffled me. Instead, the ones I saw this morning looked more like what I would have expected at this major showing of style.
In any case, I celebrate the feedback you readers provide almost daily. I definitely read your comments! None of you are snarky (even if I merited it with the Tuesday column) but you engage in civil, measured conversation. That is my goal so my sense of success in that realm far exceeds my red face for missing the context. as you have heard me say many times, re-examining context is essential in everything.
Thank you for taking time today. Please always send me feedback and course corrections on anything. This column is about all of us.
