I see this morning that a number of other people recognise the monumental aspect of Jimmy Carter making it to the century mark today. I decided several days ago to save commenting until the date itself.
Carter, as his former speechwriter James Fallows reminded us this morning, left the White House fully 44 years ago this coming January, nearly half of his long life. His post-presidency years earned him and his beloved Roslyn more kudos for their work with Habitat for Humanity than did many of his accomplishments while in office.
I remember sitting in the San Diego airport towards the 19 February 2023 when Carter entered the final phase of life as a hospice patient. I wrote of my memories of his contributions to this country, a set of appraisals far different from what I initially thought over the years. I link to that column this morning. He was not perfect as president but he was far more accomplished than too many appreciated at the time. He is indeed a genuinely amazing man, regardless of his politix or foibles. Jimmy Carter, celebrating a century, is precisely what we say we want from our public servants but so seldom see.
