Dale,

You remain the keenest of observers. I am indeed convinced all we have control over is ourselves but we unceasingly squander that power in a futile hope we have the superpower (pun intended) to ‘fix’ China. NO NoNO no. I remain skeptical that Taiwan won’t fold. Yes, Thai increased some capabilities modestly but we have created a moral hazard AND why would Taiwan citizens ever think China will change course. not the CCP but China as this remains a China issue.

"China most definitely is the topic de jour in this country and likely will be for the foreseeable future." I think quite a few Europeans may argue this point with you- they worry about Russia. Just ask our friend Arvydas of Lithuania .

Cythnia, astute as always. I especially like turning it around to discuss how we have (supposedly) control over our own behavior while we attempt to influence China. In the Air Force, we are facing a reorganization predicated on retaking the lead from China, yet will that help us attain something of value? Status quo isn’t working so worth the shot.

I did want to get your take on the article in today’s Foreign Policy. It is written from the perspective of one who helps coordinate media visits. The premise, and the part on my mind, is how concerned is the average Taiwan? Obviously much has changed since we were on the ground there, but as I watch things unfold over the past couple months there with elections, I couldn’t help ponder what the thought was of the person on the street. Curious your thoughts on this article.
