I didn't know about her late start in politics but it makes sense now that I think about popular expectations for women born in that decade. In my state, two elder stateswomen, Norma Paulus (R born in 1933) and Barbara Roberts (D born 1936, is still living), inspired many more women to pay attention and get involved and serve in ways that had far-reaching impact.
