I truly had no idea about the typos because i can’t see them. Not because i don’t try: I read each column a guaranteed three times minimum EVER DAY, often more than that.
No, it is because my reading vision after laser surgery has never gone well. I have my fifth appointment on 2 April to determine is raising my eyelids surgically is the solution.
A couple of times people mentioned a column with typos but I cannot see them. I read through thinking I am getting them but I now grasp I am not. Autocorrect is obviously not helpful.
Dear one… 59% opens is really good for social media, methinks. Congratulations! I confess I sometimes don’t read every single post (sorry)… I’m just not a “do every single thing every day” kind of person. But I do try! That having been said… let me just mention that even Heather Cox Richardson, who posts daily (nightly), takes at least one day each week to breathe and share a beautiful photo, or just a few words.
Composing posts that are both comprehensive and detailed, as yours are, takes energy. Time. Focus. Perseverance. Notto mention “an inspiration before 4 pm.” I wish I could offer to proofread for you, but my current energy bandwidth is very very small. And… typos notwithstanding, your writings are educational, informative, and appreciated. (Why must people point them out? I hope they’re polite about it.) Not to mention: the occasional typo at least proves you’re not using AI. (snarky joke.)
I’m sorry about your eyesight. What a BIG DRAG. I hope the April appt reveals some help.
Personally, if this were my substack i would dread the time consumption of a subscriber chat. Maybe just once a week? Once a month? Because you know you’ll want to respond… I’m talking about a Substack chat on the screen. Not a live one. (Those stress me out, no matter who is the leader… anxiety is my life.)
Weekdays? Three to four times a week? How much energy do you have?
"...nor do I falsely expect to solve the Taiwan-China dilemma or cure cancer." Imagine if Taiwan somehow developed the cure for cancer. Potential global game-changer! But I digress. Answers to your questions below:
1) I enjoy your column daily. But I also have time to read it most every day as well where others may not. As mentioned in previous comments, your perspective and insight provides me good "thinking material" to either research further or at least chew on for the day. I vote for daily...saying that knowing at some point, you will not be able to keep that pace. The caveat is... I'd rather have a well researched, introspective piece every couple of days vs. a less in-depth piece daily (not that any of your writing lacks depth).
2) I'd be up for experimenting with a subscriber chat in any format that makes sense.
3) Chat duration will be a factor; i.e. introduce a topic with 5 to 10 minutes of background and then open the discussion for Q&A.
4) I read everything you publish regardless of the day. Sometimes I do have to come back for a 2nd, more in-depth reading depending on what my schedule looks like.
5) I prefer written / reading options.
6) All your topics are interesting but I admit, on some, after reading a few paragraphs I realize it's either something much more in-depth than I'm ready to tackle...or, it's just not a topic of real interest for me. On those, I do still scan through them but probably do not give them the time some of your other postings get. You are so well versed in many areas that it would be hard to choose where to put emphasis. Obviously your ongoing assessments of China and its global strategy / impact are very insightful and informative. I would lean there as weekly events unfold. Current political events are so dual-sided that it's almost not worth devoting time to them. Sadly, everyone has their opinions regardless of how fact-based or researched any assessment appears to be. India seems to be back in the news lately and as another nuclear state, it'll be interesting to see how they react to current global events. Europe also seems to be in some turmoil (Germany specifically)...may be interesting to watch that a bit. And of course, Syria (harkening back to my previous responses to one of your columns about Ian Bremmer's "J Curve" theory).
Lastly, I'll just echo what I wrote to you before... your writings make me think and research, many times outside my comfort zone which is a good thing. I appreciate all you provide... even your slow days when you focus on cats, flowers and photos! Keep it all coming!! And thanks for your dedication to making us all better thinkers! Cheers!
On frequency, I like that you respond to "actions" (Where you have expertise) within a news cycle.
I'm not sure of a live chat, unless subscribers know that every Tuesday at 4 pm "Actions" will be live.
Perhaps, when there is a topic where you don't have expertise, you could pull from the expertise of your career professional friends (from FBI, legal, financial, economic, agency management, science worlds) for one-on-one print interviews.
The boo-boos don't bother me one bit.
I heard audio from your USAID piece, and thought "Wow, that Cynthia is on it!" Hmm, if you didn't create audio, it must have happened on my end. "Wow, I am with it!"
Keep doin' what you are doin'...it is perfection as far as this non-academic reader sees it.
I love reading your thoughts. I have to admit, the number of typos and missing words is disconcerting and I sometimes don’t read it because of that. If you want an editor, just say the word! I personally would be happy with 3-4 times a week as the topics strike you. I would also be happy with a chat format, just not sure how that would work. I am not a fan of audio.

To say I am mortified understates it.
Thank you for telling me. I wish I had known.
