I can think of no one better to launch our webinar discussions! Dr. Bernard Cole served his nation faithfully for fifty years before formal retirement in 2015. Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, he earned a commission in the U.S. Navy. Career highlights he cites deploying twice to Vietnam (including with the U.S. Marine Corps at Khe Sanh) and commanding USS Rathburne (FF 1057) as well as Destroyer Squadron 35. Dr. Cole earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Jackson School of the University of Washington, igniting his interest in China. Dr. Cole was a Navy ROTC instructor at Auburn University where he simultaneously earned a doctorate in history.
Dr. Cole’s final assignment in uniform was at the National War College, leading to his second career there as Professor of Maritime History. At the College, he wrote a several highly respected volumes on the People’s Liberation Army Navy, energy in China, Taiwan’s defense establishment, and China’s quest for great power status. His first novel, Red Shark at Sea, is being published by Amazon.com this month. Dr. Cole remains a prolific scholar and popular speaker on China’s security situation abroad.
